Why are women's sports uniforms soo skin revealing?

For example: i play volleyball, and we have to wear these tinya** spandex shorts. im also in track, the guys also wear kinda short shorts, but the girls' are MUCH shorter, and the tops are a lot tighter too. i've watched college track teams, and the girls are basically wearing a sportsbra with spandex underwear.
