Should i buy monitors for my home studio?

Is it mandatory i need to buy computer monitors to have a home studio or to just record/produce music, also whats the purpose of having it? also im kinda on a budget (around $500) i dont have a mac, just a regular laptop, i was thinking i could just buy an audio interface, and microphone, and headphones.
