When to buy a pumpkin?

I plan to carve pumpkins a couple of days before Halloween. Last year, I waited until the day I was going to carve to buy my pumpkins, and ended up with the bottom of the barrel. I checked a few places, and only dented and mis-shaped pumpkins were left. When is the best time to buy pumpkins
