What's that smell in my water?

A weird smell starting presenting itself in my water 2 days ago. It affects both hot and cold water. I have city water and a gas water heater that is approximately 8 years old. The smell doesn't smell like a burnt match or rotten eggs.

I don't know if water has a smell or not but you can smell if you are near water. I can tell if I am near a river or a creek by the feel and smell in the air so maybe there is something to it. I am not sure what it is but some people can tell when they are near water. : )
