Is buying a diamond ring a good investment?

I came from a poor family and never really had anything new, I had 2nd or 3rd hand clothes and almost everything was bought from yard sales and Salvation army. I'm 26 now, I graduated from college and saved up a sum of money. With a few thousand of it I want to buy a diamond ring at least 1 carat big. I've always wanted a big diamond ring. Is that a good investment? Or is this a bad idea.
