Does anyone know anything about platinum catalytic converter recycling through refineries?

I am trying to figure out what the most the matierials of a catalytic converter are worth in volume or not on average .I'm confused when platinum sells for well over $1400 an ounce why are converters for 100.00 each with so many refineries competing even when i sell on ebay?
