The best tennis fitness workout would work specifically to develop your physical abilities in order to optimize your exact game application of those abilities.

It means a cardiac training by interval (that's using a high intensity level for series of short period followed by a relaxing phase of lesser intensity); a lifting session meant to enhance specifically the power in the lower body and core muscles (this is done with a moderately high weight lifted at a high speed - power is roughly "quick strength") and to provide muscular endurance, primarily in the deltoids; a session of movements meant to enhance flexibility.

That's exactly how a tennis pro trains if his coach is not a stubborn traditionalist. Science tells me it's how you train, but as most people tend to grip onto certain ideas without understanding them, it's nearly impossible to change their mind and adapt their teachings to the latest discoveries.
